What to Know

  • Most breeders require an appointment — do not show up unannounced.
  • Each breeder reserves the right to approve all homes.
  • Expect to be asked questions about your lifestyle and experience.
  • Ask questions before visiting — evaluate objectively first.
  • Verify AKC registration before purchasing any dog.

How to Identify a Good Breeder

  • Breeds to the AKC Standard for Basset Hounds
  • Health tests breeding stock with documentation
  • Active in AKC events — conformation, field trials, or performance
  • Provides a written contract and health guarantee
  • Willing to take a dog back at any time during its life
  • Does not sell through pet stores or online

Warning: Puppy Scams

The BHCSC takes puppy scams seriously. Fraudulent breeders create convincing websites, collect payment, and never deliver a dog.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Operates only through a website with no verifiable physical location
  • Asks for payment before you have met the dogs in person
  • Willing to ship a puppy without ever meeting you
  • Price seems too good to be true
  • Does not provide AKC registration papers
  • Pressures you to make a quick decision

If something does not feel right, trust your instincts. The FBI has issued warnings about these types of scams.

More Breeder Resources

The Basset Hound Club of America also maintains a breeder directory with breeders across the United States.

Club membership alone does not guarantee that a breeder is responsible. Always do your own homework — visit the facility, ask to see health clearances, and follow the guidance above.
